Understanding Melasma: Causes and Preventative Tips

Melasma is a very common skin problem. It ranges from brown to gray-brown spots on the face. These spots are often on the cheeks, nose bridge, forehead, chin, and upper lip. You can also have melasma on sun-exposed areas like the forearms and neck. Many do not fully understand what melasma is and why it happens. And what can you do to prevent these spots from showing up? Let’s go ahead and find out.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is due to the patchy brown pigmentation of the skin. Melasma is not caused by an infection. Contrary to popular belief, melasma is not cancerous, nor is it a symptom of one. Melasma tends to affect women more than men.

Melasma is particularly noticeable in women during pregnancy, menopause, and while taking birth control pills. Melasma often shows up on the skin during the summer months. They also become darker and more visible during this time. But if there is less sunshine, these spots also lighten up.

What Causes Melasma?

There is no single cause for melasma. Several factors can trigger it. The most common are sun exposure and hormonal changes. Both can cause the overproduction of melanin which is a skin-darkening pigmentation.

In addition, melasma can also be caused by medications that may make your skin hypersensitive to the rays of the sun. Others are caused by hormone replacement therapy and allergic reactions to cosmetic products.

Simple Tricks to Prevent Melasma

There are different types of melasma treatment out there. Regardless of what treatment you use, some are more effective than others.

  • Regularly Use Sunscreen. Do not forget to use sunscreen every day. Use sunscreen even if you’re indoors or when it’s cold weather. The higher the sunscreen protection, the better. Sunscreen is your first line of defense and it will prevent melasma from coming back.
  • Stay Away From The Harmful Rays of the Sun. If you need to be outdoors, make sure that you wear a hat or an umbrella to protect your face. Read more from an informative health blog online to understand how the sun can affect the skin.
  • Use the Right Products. Choose your cosmetic products wisely. Avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals. Safe products should not sting or burn. Also, steer clear of soaps or facial wash products that are too fragrant.

Melasma does not stay on your skin forever if you know how to prevent it. If you want to get rid of the dark patches on your skin, check your lifestyle and the products that you use. There are different treatments available, but always remember that prevention is better than cure.
